We are a design-and-build ecological landscaping company. This means we build what we design from start to finish. We work with you from your very first ideas through the complete design process—and then we build your dream into a reality. We also offer a range of garden maintenance services. To discuss a new project, please send an email containing the scope of your idea to projects@thenaturalgarden.net. One of our team members will get back to you to set up a consultation.

*Note: we design in order to build. Our designs are not standalone, but must be attached to a build/install project. We do, however, build from others’ designs as well.
Old World Stonework

Living Landscapes
Our team carefully prepares the soil and plants each plug according to the design specifications so that each plant has the best chance of success. Click on the image to see a gallery of our favorite plantings.
Timberwork & Fences
We build wooden fences, raised garden beds, arbors, and other structures. For special projects, we partner with artisan timber experts K&M Timberworks. Click the image above to find a gallery of our previous projects.
Rain & Water Gardens
We’ve designed and built assorted water gardens that include natural stone, attention to water flow, and native plants adapted for wet areas. We also sell native plants from our nursery that you may add to wet areas in your landscape to help manage stormwater. Click the image for examples.
Garden Coaching & Maintenance
There’s no such thing as “zero maintenance,” but we can work for you and alongside you to transform high-maintenance gardens into lower-maintenance gardens. We offer:
weeding and weed management
encouraging total plant coverage
shredding old growth as mulch
mulching with bark, wood chips or straw
transplanting
pruning
erosion management
concentrated seed dispersal
garden coaching to transform high-maintenance gardens into lower-maintenance gardens
Habitat Maintenance
New meadows, streams, and woodlands need specific maintenance for the first few years, including monitoring for invasive weeds and removing them. We can cover for you:
controlling for invasive plants
monitoring plant health
controlled burning (for meadows, if allowable in your area)
annual or more frequent mowing (for meadows)
additional native plant density as needed
Native Plant Sales
We grow a selection of native plants in our nursery. Check out our selection and see how you can order them below:
We also sell plants at the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market every Saturday from 8 am to 1 pm from April-June and September-October
You can order plants online and then pick them up at the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market on the following Saturday. You will need to order before noon on Friday in order to have the plants ready to pick up on Saturday.
